Pre-Marathon

Anyone who has run a marathon will tell you trainers are key for a comfortable run. Whilst it may be worth investing in a pair of trainers for your run they should be lightweight but sturdy and provide good support. It is also important to ‘break’ them in and give your new trainers a test run, ideally training in them to ensure they don’t give you blisters or rub. If you don’t train in them wear them on at least one 10-mile run at marathon pace and if the trainers cause you any discomfort on this test run, get another pair before it’s too late.

It is also advisable to do a dress rehearsal for the marathon, making sure your clothes are comfortable and do not chafe. With organic and natural becoming more and more mainstream in today’s beauty industry and no longer considered a niche marker, it has become increasingly harder to determine the difference. Many brands use the terms ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ but what do they actually mean and how can we establish which brands are truly organic?

 

Your skin is the largest organ of your body and what you put on it can be absorbed in tiny amounts. So it’s no surprise that a growing number of beauty products are now being produced with organic ingredients.  Unfortunately, unlike food there are currently no legal standards for organic labeling in beauty. This makes it harder for consumers as some brands jump on the organic bandwagon, marketing them as organic or natural when they are not.

 

The disadvantage to the consumer is they are often duped into buying a product believing it is better because it is organic or natural when the product in fact contains little or no natural/organic ingredients at all! Summer to autumn skincare

After a hot and humid summer, it’s time for us to gear up for a whole new routine as we move into autumn. Our wardrobe will have to be adapted to suit the colder weather, summer salads will be replaced with hearty soups and of course, our skincare routine will have to change too!

But before we give you our top skin and body care tips to see you through the colder months, let’s take a look at the most common problems the summer sun may have caused to our skin and how we can rectify any damage done.

Sunburn

Sun exposure during the summer can lead to redness and peeling, as well as other skin problems like age spots and hyperpigmentation, so the most important thing to do during autumn is to repair any damage and keep skin hydrated.  To help repair the damage look for products containing vitamin A to help oven out skin tone and decrease pigmentation problems.

Moisture stripping temperatures also means we need to switch our products to far more hydrating formulas. Try swapping lighter lotions for rich moisturisers and creams.

Aging is a fact of life, it’s biologically inevitable, but there are tips and tricks we can do to protect our skin. Firstly, it’s important to understand the skin’s structure and how it actually works: Human skin is made up of three layers:

The Epidermis - This is what you see in the mirror and it includes many layers, but it’s the tough outermost portion that works to shed off dead skin. Melanin, which is dark pigment formed by cells is also found in the epidermis, and the more melanin you have, the darker your skin.

The Dermis - The dermis is thicker than the epidermis, and contains far more important components like sweat glands, fat, vessels and blood vessels, as well as collagen to provide elasticity for the skin.

A Subcutaneous layer - This is the deepest layer and is mainly made up of fat to keep us warm.

So now we understand the basic structure of our skin, how does it change as we age? The skin’s ability to regenerate and renew is remarkable, skin cells are constantly forming and making their way to the top of the epidermis but with age, this slows down significantly.
