SUMMER TO AUTUMN SKINCARE

October 1st, 2015

After a hot and humid summer, it’s time for us to gear up for a whole new routine as we move into autumn. Our wardrobe will have to be adapted to suit the colder weather, summer salads will be replaced with hearty soups and of course, our skincare routine will have to change too!

But before we give you our top skin and body care tips to see you through the colder months, let’s take a look at the most common problems the summer sun may have caused to our skin and how we can rectify any damage done.

Sunburn

Sun exposure during the summer can lead to redness and peeling, as well as other skin problems like age spots and hyperpigmentation, so the most important thing to do during autumn is to repair any damage and keep skin hydrated.  To help repair the damage look for products containing vitamin A to help oven out skin tone and decrease pigmentation problems.

Moisture stripping temperatures also means we need to switch our products to far more hydrating formulas. Try swapping lighter lotions for rich moisturisers and creams.

Brown spots and freckles

Don’t be fooled by cute freckles as these tiny brown pigments actually mean you’re damaging your skin. To prevent further skin damage, wear an SPF of at least 30 and remember to reapply every two hours. If you find you already have brown patches, use a serum which contains vitamin C. Not only will this offer your skin extra protection, it acts a skin lightener too.

So now we know how to repair any damage done during the summer, here are our top 5 skin care tips to keep your skin looking beautiful during the colder months.

1. Analyse your skin thoroughly

The most important thing to remember is when the seasons change, so can your skin type. In a previous season you may have been an oily skin type, but moving into the next you might notice your skin turns more ‘normal’, or those with normal skin might notice their skin is dry.

Keep an eye on this, as this means you will need to change your skincare accordingly. If you are unsure at to whether your skin needs a new regime, visit a cosmetics counter to see what skin care type you fall into.

2. Moisturise every single day

A daily coating of lotion and cream can take your skin from looking dull to smooth and supple, so remember to hydrate your skin on a daily basis.

Tip: The best time to apply your lotion is after you’ve had a bath or shower, as you will seal in the moisture that’s already been absorbed into your skin.

3. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate

During the cooler months, our normal skin shedding process tends to slow down, which means our skin can become drier, rougher and develop a dull looking appearance. If you don’t exfoliate on a regular basis you might accumulate dry flaky skin, which can lead to clogged pores. Not only this, exfoliation helps our body moisturisers to penetrate the skin.

4. Protect your hands

It’s important to keep the skin on your hands protected during the winter months, as your hands are exposed to cold weather everyday. To protect them from dry air, wear gloves and apply lotions and ointments to your hands frequently, especially after washing your hands.

5. Don’t forget sunscreen

It’s important to remember that sunscreen is a daily essential. Just because you can’t see the sun, this doesn’t mean the rays aren’t there; they are, and they are just as damaging as they are in the summer. So that you don’t forget to apply sunscreen, use a daily moisturiser that contains SPF 15 and then reapply with a facial sunscreen throughout the day.
