The power of antioxidants

Our skin is our largest organ, which is why it’s extremely important to look after it; so when it comes to picking the best anti-ageing ingredients for our skin, it’s safe to say that antioxidants are always a wise choice.

So what exactly are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are compounds such as vitamins C and E, zinc and copper, but they are also found in botanicals like green tea, olives, pomegranates and mushrooms to name a few.

How do antioxidants help the health and appearance of our skin?

Antioxidants work to protect the skin by limiting the production of free radicals; the main culprit for damaging our skin cells, which leads to the visible and hidden signs of ageing.

However, antioxidants also do far more than this! They enhance the effectiveness of sunscreens to help decrease the effects of sun exposure, which can put us at higher risk of cellular damage, age spots and early wrinkling, dullness and discolouration. So of course, this great combination of sun protection plus antioxidants creates an excellent anti-ageing day defense for us, while dosing our skin of antioxidants at night can promote cellular repair and healing.

In fact, there is actually a whole host of great benefits that antioxidants have on our skin, so here are our top three:

Scar Treatment:

Scar tissue has a different cell structure to that of healthy skin, so you need to use an antioxidant that works to increase blood flow to the scar tissue. This will result in minimizing the look of the scar, whilst blending in the development of new skin. Antioxidants found in aloe are great to use and treatments in the form of a gel are perfect. Try our Soothing Skin Gel; it contains the patented active ingredient Plantolin and with it's proven anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties it works to soothe, rehydrate and repair rough, dry and damaged skin.

Skin Firming:

Antioxidants can also rejuvenate the skin’s appearance, so when choosing an eye cream or any other product that is meant to tone the skin, look for antioxidants such as Coenzyme Q-10, or CoQ-10 as these have common skin-firming properties.

Anti-inflammation:

The calming effect of inflammation is actually the most desirable benefit of antioxidants. Antioxidants work by increasing circulation and cell metabolism, which produces anti-inflammatory results, promoting even skin tone as well as controlling acne and wrinkles.
