Now the Christmas festivities are out of the way for another year many of us will be wanting to get back on track to get fit and healthy and millions of us will begin to detox our bodies back to health.

A detox involves weaning off your bad habits and abstaining from your unhealthy vices whether that be your alcohol sugar or caffeine overload, your coach potato lifestyle, smoking or snacking on fatty foods. The start of the New Year will trigger us to set goals and do ‘Dry Januarys’ and diets to make up from the damage done over Christmas and New Year.

You may notice that you will be able to stave off the snivels more while you detox as your body will be absorbing more vitamins and nutrients from healthier foods, which will overall advance your immune system. Foods such as spinach, apples, carrots and berries are rich in vitamins C and E and zinc and are fantastic to add to your diet to boost your immune system. If your New Year resolution is to do more regular exercise then this will also have an impact on your immune system as exercise releases ‘feel good’ endorphins.

Caffeine has been known to raise cortisol levels, which can make you feel more anxious and stressed or sugar and sweeteners can stimulate insomnia. Eliminating these from your body and substituting with healthier alternatives such as green tea or natural sweeteners like honey will induce you to cope with pressures in a calmer way.  Meditation is another detox plan that will help balance your emotions and takes a step back from your reality to reassess what’s worth worrying about.

The money you spend on your morning Starbucks latte or wine on a Friday night does gradually bleed your bank account, so by detoxing yourself from these drinks this will not only improve your health but it will also steady your funds.
